My boyfriend says some hurtful things to me. I love him too much to leave him but is this wrong?

We got in an argument and for some reason he brought up my past. He is really jealous of my past flings and such. But he is not so innocent himself. Anyways he said some mean things about it and made me cry. Later he apologized and told me not to be a debbie downer about it. But i cant just let him off the hook so easily for how he treats me. I am always crying because he yells at me and he says he needs to work on controlling himself but it feels like hes not progressing. I love him alot and cant bear being without him. I feel like those abused women on maury who cant leave their husbands because they say they love them. (but hes never physically hurt me). Any advice?
