Why do it take a horrible incidence like the Vir Tech killings for people to show compion?

On the day before the shootings at Vir Tech nobody cared about those 32 people who died. Everyone just saw them as competition to be defeated in the marketplace. Nobody really cared about their welfare or safety. Think about the way everyone conduct their daily lives.
