Do they usually do surgery for a lump on the thyroid?

I have a "complex cyst" on my thyroid and the thyroid is enlarged. I had an ultrasound 6 months ago and another last week. The doctor says the cyst is bigger than it was 6 months ago so he is sending me to an ear, nose and throat specialist. My thyroid bloodwork has all been normal so far. I am just curious as to what the next step might be. My doctor is sending me for more bloodwork to send the results to the specialist. The lump is big enough that I can feel it and it makes me choke on liquids sometimes. Otherwise, I'm fine. The idea of knives and needles near my throat really grosses me out. If you have been through this or know anything more about it, please share! Thanks!
